Robert Andrew Perez

humans differ from plants
in that they choke to death

over a matter of years

more gracefully. lose color
each successive season

with a promise

of a return to vibrancy
we neglect to acknowledge

is false. against the wall
& its brick foundation

the tree snuffs the light
from a hydrangea bush.

[ schizophragma. reservoir. ]

summer flicks off
another of its flings. water
is what we say is enough

when nothing can be recovered.
i remember a bigger pom-pom.

[ silence. rhododendron. ]

i used to memorize numbers.
now i just recognize them.
